Your first car: the tutorial build
The game tutorial gives you a basic chassis to start with. Do not scrap it immediately. Instead, study how it is put together. Notice where the engine sits, how gears connect to the axle, and how wheels attach to suspension arms. This layout is your baseline.
For your first independent build, keep it simple. Use the default chassis frame — it is lightweight and has mounting points in logical places. Add one Electrix-180 electric motor. Electric motors are the best starting point because they are compact, produce consistent torque, and do not require fuel management like combustion engines.
Connect the motor to two medium gears using axles. Medium gears give you a balanced ratio that works for both acceleration and top speed without requiring precise tuning. Then attach four small rubber tires through suspension arms. Rubber tires grip well on paved surfaces and are forgiving if your alignment is slightly off.
Understanding the gear chain
The order of gears matters more than most beginners realize. Power flows from the motor through each gear in sequence. A smaller gear driving a larger gear reduces speed but increases torque — this is what you want near the motor. A larger gear driving a smaller gear does the opposite: more speed, less torque.
A useful rule of thumb from experienced builders: assign the motor a value of 10 points. Each gear in the chain should add or subtract from that number. Going from a medium gear (roughly 10) to a small gear (roughly 7) gives you a ratio that favors acceleration. Going from medium to large (roughly 13) favors top speed.
For your first build, use two medium gears of the same size. Same-size gears produce a 1:1 ratio, meaning no change in speed or torque. This eliminates ratio tuning from the equation while you learn other systems. Once the car drives reliably, experiment with different gear sizes.

Too many engines. Adding a second engine doubles your power but also doubles your weight and fuel consumption. One well-placed engine with a good gear ratio beats two engines with a bad ratio every time. Stick with a single motor until you understand weight distribution.

Ignoring weight distribution. If all your heavy parts sit on one end of the chassis, the car will tip or handle unpredictably. Place the engine near the center or slightly toward the rear, and spread accessories evenly.

Diagnosing a broken build
If your car will not move, check these things in order: first, confirm the engine is actually attached to the chassis and powered on. Second, verify the axle connects the engine to at least one gear. Third, make sure that gear connects to a wheel through an axle or gear chain. A missing link anywhere in the drivetrain means zero power reaches the ground.
If the car moves but pulls to one side, your wheels are not aligned symmetrically. Use the garage mirror tool to compare left and right sides. Uneven suspension stiffness or mismatched tire sizes cause drift.

Progression path
Your first car teaches you assembly. Your second car teaches you tuning. By your fifth build, you should be comfortable swapping parts and testing different configurations.
After mastering the tutorial build, try replacing the Electrix-180 with an Electrix-360 for more power. Then experiment with three gears instead of two. Then try adding a second axle for all-wheel drive.
